Simulation Analysis of Static Partitioning with Slackness

    No full text
Static partitioning with slackness is a method for parallelizing search-based systems. The general properties of this method are analyzed with respect to various run-time distributions of tasks, and the influence of problem specific parameters as well as variation of the slackness are inspected. The evaluation is done based on simulations using MAOS, a software package for modelling and analyzing queueing network models. 1 Introduction Search is a fundamental paradigm for approaching AI problems. Unfortunately, the search complexity of many interesting AI problems is at the border of tractability (or beyond). Since parallel search promises to alleviate the limits posed onto AI by sequential computing capacity, it is an important option for extending the power and applicability of AI systems. A particular method for parallelizing search is static partitioning with slackness ([Suttner, 1993]), a method which is easy to simulate, simple to realize, and, since it requires little communica..

A Simulation Study of ATM Call Admission Control

Call admission control in ATM networks shall prevent congestion and thus secure quality of service. But in spite of much interest and eort, the subject is still unsettled and without an agreed-upon "best practice". This paper presents cac sim, a discrete event simulation tool that allows to study and compare call admission methods in a concrete and realistic setting, and a nontrivial application which concerns the German research broadband network (DFN B-WiN) and the associated traÆc as recently measured respectively prognosticated for innovative load elements. 1 Introduction Call admission control (CAC) is an important function in ATM networks: When a connection, characterized by its service class, traÆc parameters and quality of service (QoS) demands is requested, CAC decides whether the network can meet the requirements of the newcomer while maintaining those of the already established connections. CAC shall prevent congestion and associated cell losses or delays, but of course CA..

Altmetrics for large, multidisciplinary research groups: Comparison of current tools

    No full text
Most altmetric studies compare how often a publication has been cited or mentioned on the Web. Yet, a closer look at altmetric analyses reveals that the altmetric tools employed and the social media platforms considered may have a significant effect on the available information and ensuing interpretation. Therefore, it is indicated to investigate and compare the various tools currently available for altmetric analyses and the social media platforms they draw upon. This paper will present results from a comparative altmetric analysis conducted employing four well-established altmetric services based on a broad, multidisciplinary sample of scientific publications. Our study reveals that for several data sources the coverage of findable publications on social media platforms and metric counts (impact) can vary across altmetric data providers
